and so intense. >> a flash and a boom. the show that lit up the sky and has a lot of people asking, what was that? >> stranded in game 3. giants frustrated by st. louis' pitching. time to get bats going tonight because it's time for game 4. >> beautiful weather around the bay area. but that is all about to change. we are getting ready for some rain. we'll talk about that coming up. >> and we got roadwork this morning heading up towards downtown oakland. but a lot of the bay area looks pretty good for the start of our morning drive. much more traffic and weather coming up. >> good morning, everyone. it's thursday, october 18. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:00 on the nose. i guess did you hear it last night or maybe you were outside did you see it? many people across northern california reported seeing a flash and hearing a big boom. >> cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran has more on the meteor sighting that's left some souvenirs in one east bay city. good morning, cate. >> reporter: yes, good morning, frank and michelle. this is the kind of thing that makes all of us mad that we had to go to bed so early because i

definitely missed it. but i have read a couple of conflicting reports on this and i want to point out that, you know, experts here at the chabot space and science center say it's not part of the meteor shower expected over the weekend but some say it's a preview. it's not over. we have some black and white surveillance footage from san jose's lick observatory. you can see it up close and personal. that white mass slowly moving across the sky. now an astronomy instructor here at the chabot space and science center says a meteor probably hit the earth right around martinez hills about the size of a car before it broke up into a few pieces. we have a picture from a viewer that snapped it for us in santa cruz. experts say it hit us at speeds 25,000 miles per hour possibly more around 8:00 last night. it was a loud boom as you mentioned which is actually a sonic boom and sightings were

reported all around the bay even in sacramento. >> all of a sudden i seen this like huge looked like a rock or meteor or something fly over us. i went, oh, my god, what's that? >> looked like a movie. it was so big you could see the flames on it. >> reporter: we also got some tweets from viewers people on social media. this is from a viewer in campbell who said, quote, just saw the most amazing meteor ever of my life. bright fireball, long, green, gold and red trail. now, so that -- if you missed that last night, don't worry, we're expecting a meteor shower on friday and saturday. it's part of hailey's comet. if you snapped photos, send them to us at mornings@cbs5.com. we're live in oakland, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. it's a bummer that we go to

bed so early. i didn't even hear it or see it. >> i was in the east bay last night didn't hear a thing. but it's amazing. and all the space stuff that's been going on lately meteors in our backyard here. >> remember we had that one that came down near sacramento too long ago. you never know. get out there and look around, you might see interesting stuff. the fog is going to make a return but not today. we are look at nice clear skies all the way to the coastline mid-60s out at the beaches. also in san francisco, 64 degrees, cool in santa rosa at 48 degrees. but clear now. high pressure still holding on one more day of that beautiful weather all the way to the coastline then eventually this system works across that ridge and that will bring more of a sea breeze toward the bay area as early as tonight. that means we'll cool the temperatures down into friday. but staying warm for today usually in the 70s. by the afternoon, well above the average. low 90s inland. maybe as high as 80 degrees in san francisco. that's 10 degrees above

average. you know what, though, toward the weekend we could actually head below average and then maybe next week elizabeth we start to talk about more rain. >> crazy from swimsuits to rain jackets. didn't take long matter of days. outside, enjoy this dry weather while we have it. so far the commute is not too bad. as you can see, it's starting to get a little busier than a half hour ago. this is 101 near mckee in san jose. headlights should be moving northbound. and everything looks free and clear towards santa clara. if you are commuting along the peninsula, this is a live look close to candlestick and bayshore. southbound 101 looks great down towards sfo and continues to move well all the way into palo alto. i had mentioned that overnight roadwork. looks like they are in the process of picking that up now at least in the northbound lanes. southbound 101 approaching embarcadero already gone. also out of there that connector ramp that has reopened. westbound 37 to southbound 101, so it was scheduled to wrap up by about 5:00. that appears to be the case through novato.

everything looks good across the golden gate bridge and the approaches. you can see it is now in the green on southbound 101 between 580 and the toll plaza. more traffic coming up. in the meantime, back to you guys. >> thank you. the city of oakland is thinking of contracting with outside law enforcement agencies to beef up police presence on city streets in the city. the tribune says city officials are considering paying sheriff's deputies and highway patrol officers to work in oakland for several months after that cadets finish their training at the police academy crime in the city is up and there were 200 fewer officers than just four years ago. oakland police hope surveillance video will help solve a murder case from almost a year ago. charles butler was killed the morning of december 22nd, 2011, after bumping the fender of another car on the city's north side. the video shows two suspects arguing with butler, who is seen in the white hoodie there. investigators say the two men later followed butler and shot

him a few blocks away. >> not only are they murderers, they are thieves. they stole my brother's future. i mean, he was on his way of doing good things. >> police hope witnesses will come forward to help identify the two suspects. police in pacifica have arrested a man in connection with a murder there. officers were called to the home on dell road early yesterday morning after reports of a disturbance. that's where they found the body of 24-year-old keith coffee. police are not releasing the name of the suspect. they say he had an earlier altercation with coffee. former santa clara county doctor is charged with 18 drug- related felonies and will appear in a san jose courtroom today. dr. marvin bonham is accused of trading prescription drugs like oxycontin for cash and methamphetamines. prosecutors also say he wrote prescription for people with criminal drug histories. until last week he worked as the medical director of the valley health plan. palo alto police are looking for a robber who bolted out of a credit union with

armsful of cash. this man entered the star 1 credit union about 11 a.m. yesterday and then vaulted over the counter towards the teller and grabbed an unknown amount of money from the drawer. at least one witness said the suspect was carrying a gun. he was last seen running eastbound on ventura avenue. there's an angry elmo walking the streets of san francisco at least a man dressed like elmo. his name is adam sandler, and no, he is not relate to the actor. but the colorful character he has been arrested for harassing tourists and spewing anti- semitic rants in new york city. he is now popping up in fisherman's wharf and in a park anyoner richmond and passersby as you can imagine are not exactly tickled. >> this is a family area, it's a big tourist area. i don't think this is something that families should be listening to. i don't think this is something right for the area. >> sandler admits he was deported from cambodia in 1999 for running a porn website. he now makes money on small donations from tourists.

other bay area headlines we're following this morning, a livermore man is the first person in alameda county to be treated for west nile virus this year. county officials say he first reported symptoms in late september and is currently recovering. this brings the total number of cases in california to 277. a historic air force radar tower south of san jose will stay standing for now. the government agency that owns the 80-foot-high structure on mount umunum had been trying to figure out a way to keep it from being demolished. last night they decided to leave the tower intact for five years while money is raised to repair it. later this morning, bay area students will drop and cover as part of the great california shakeout. the statewide drill teaches the proper techniques to prevent injuries during the next big quake. emergency crews will also practice their disaster response plans. it is 5:08 now. a man is being held without bail in new york accused of plotting to blow up the federal reserve building there. kwauzi nafis is a native of

bangladesh was arrested yesterday morning after a sting operation. federal investigators say he parked a van that was filled with what he believed were explosives outside the building and then tried to detonate it. the bomb, though, was not real because his associates were actually under covered officers. [ pause ] >> nafis did not enter a plea during a brief court appearance in brooklyn yesterday afternoon. president obama and mitt romney will make another joint appearance this evening at a new york event with a light harded tradition. the alfred e. smith memorial foundation dinner raises money for needy children. the two candidates campaigned in battleground states yesterday. the president criticized romney's comment in the previous night's debate that he would need binders full of women to find qualified females for had qualified cabinet

embarrassing foot faux pas n india. australia's head of state is recovering after an embarrassing foot faux pas in india. oh, poor thing. the prime minister literally fell head over heels today when her heel got caught in some soft grass. this is outside the ghandi memorial in new delhi. she was unhurt. she laughed off the incident. later she explained the mechanics of feminine footwear to the male journalists present just in case -- it's kind of tough. >> of course, it's caught on tape, you know? >> no kidding. that happened to me on my first day of school in college. before youtube, right? at least it wasn't permanent forever. we unfortunately in television know all about that too well. outside a live look outside. here's a look at the bay bridge toll plaza and so far, so good. pretty quiet all the way into san francisco this morning as you head up the upper deck. elsewhere the san mateo bridge, you can see the right side of your screen is the commute direction. and this is actually a live look at milpitas 880/237. so the silicon valley ride is off to a nice start, as well. let's go to our maps show you what else is going on all across the bay area. westbound 580 through the altamont pass, just your usual brake lights right now a bit of slowing past those wind turbines. but eastbound 580 you will find some more roadwork as well between north greenville and north flynn so just a heads up. caltrans crews are out there now blocking various lanes should be picking that up pretty quickly here. towards the dublin interchange, this is closer towards the tassajara exit, all those taillights are heading westbound towards the dublin- pleasanton area.

pretty nice ride towards 680. as you can see, it turns back to green on our traffic sensors. so green in our world means good because it means speeds over 40 miles per hour. southbound 101 free and clear. there was some roach on the approach to the golden gate bridge. now it's just northbound past the waldo tunnel towards sir francis drake. otherwise across the golden gate bridge itself, still looks good. they should be doing more lane changes coming up getting more cars into san francisco. the nimitz, a lot of overnight roadwork was picked up around 5:00. you will find it towards the downtown oakland exit towards embarcadero northbound 880 so caltrans crews are out there still. that is a check of your "timesaver traffic." we have one more day of gorgeous weather. lawrence has that. >> this could be it. we have to take advantage of this elizabeth. lots of sunshine all the way to the coastline. temperatures very mild even out at the beaches this morning. some of those numbers in the mid-60s already. a little bit cooler in some of

the valleys actually down in the upper 40s in the north bay now. by the afternoon that offshore wind is going to crank up some beautiful weather once again. 90s showing up inland a little hot there but beautiful 70s toward the coast and 80s inside the bay. that ridge holding on for one last day with that offshore wind but things will begin to change so enjoy it. the trough is beginning to encroach on top of the ridge bringing a sea breeze back to the bay area later on today and tonight likely seeing fog returning. fire danger height in the north and east bay hills red flag warning this morning. otherwise plenty of sunshine and gorgeous weather. 70 degrees in half moon bay. about 76 in pacifica. about 81 in hayward. a little hot inland with 80s and 90s but this will be the last day of hot temperatures as much cooler weather is expected over the next couple of days. 75 in daly city, 87 in santa rosa and about 80 degrees in san francisco. next couple of days, those temperatures really cool down and probably below average through sunday with more clouds

on the way throughout the weekend. and by this next week, looks like we have a storm system headed our way. showers expected on monday, tuesday and possibly wednesday of next week. big changes ahead, guys. back to you. >> thank you. harsh weather got the best of things in the major league baseball play-offs. cbs 5 sports director dennis o'donnell is in st. louis where the san francisco giants are trying to keep their world series hopes alive. >> reporter: frank, michelle, good morning, everybody from st. louis. last night, incredible. matt carpenter who was in for the injured carlos beltran just a rookie he had a two-run home run off matt cain. that was the difference maker. the giants lost 3-1. but get this. carpenter is 5 for 5 against matt cain. so the giants got to win today to even the series. tim lincecum will take the hill opposing adam wainwright. we'll be here with all the highlights and post-game tonight at 6:00. guys? >> we're pulling for them. in detroit, the tigers and new york yankees never even got started thanks to the rain.

game 4 is now scheduled for this afternoon. the tigers lead the series 3 games to none and need just one more victory to advance to the world series. 5:18 now. the numbers are up again today in that deadly fungal meningitis outbreak. 19 people have already died and 245 others have all been infected. fda investigators raided the massachusetts company that's behind the deadly outbreak. the center recalled all of its drugs. a colorado judge is allowing prosecutors now to examine university records of the man that's charged in those colorado theater shootings. prosecutors say the records could help establish a motive for the july 20 shooting that killed 12 and injured 58. lawyers for alleged gunman james holmes call the records irrelevant and accuse the prosecution of conducting a fishing expedition. university of phoenix is phasing out 115 locations nationwide. the company that owns the school says it's all part of a plan to cut $300 million in

operating costs by 2014. the changes will affect around 13,000 students and about 800 employees will lose their jobs. no word yet on how the four bay area campuses will be affected. the growing burden of student loan debt among recent grads has hit a record high. the average 2011 grad walked the graduation stage owing nearly $27,000 in outstanding loans. that's up 5% from 2010. the institute for college access and success says tuition, fees, the availability of financial aid, and a tough job market also factor into the debt students pile up. for the first time in more than a decade american airlines is now looking to add some new flight attendants. the carrier is officially in bankruptcy but needs to fill roughly 1500 positions. 2200 veteran employees are now leaving the company as part of a buy-out. new hires will have to take a pay cut receiving less than the $45,000 average salary current flight attendants get. a daily multivitamin may

>> cbs 5 reporter anne makovec joins us from castro valley are the latest. >> reporter: we know there is a criminal investigation here at the house behind me but we don't know a lot of other details right now about what's going on. you can see a lot of sheriff's deputies actually there's another news van passing but there's a group of sheriff's deputies there talking. and they have this house roped off. there was a fire at this house just after midnight. not a really bad fire. it was a one-alarm fire. firefighters are all gone right now. but the sheriff's office is here. and it does look like they are expanding the crime scene rather than shrinking it so this appears to be a growing investigation right now. in fact, right now they are in the process of moving all of the news crews back so they can further isolate the scene. so a lot of questions. we have heard several unconfirmed reports there might be a body inside the house but none of the deputies out here

will say whether or not that is true. we'll continue to follow this for you and bring you the latest live in castro valley. anne makovec, cbs 5. police in petaluma are on the lookout for a teenaged girl after she was last seen with a 29-year-old man. 15-year-old ruby cruz mendoza was spotted just before 5:30 last night climbing into a tan or silver two door car. she was seen getting into the car with this man, hilaire i don't carmona. investigators believe the two might be in a relationship together. it was a spectacular light show that was seen and heard throughout the bay area last night. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is live now at the chabot space center with more on this out of this world phenomenon. it was cool. >> reporter: i'm only sad that i missed it. of course our early bedtime being on a morning show you miss out on these things. but we did have pictures which is great. so take a look at this video.

we have an up-close and personal view thanks to the lick observatory. it was the size of a small car. it hit the martinez hills around 8:00 last night traveling at about 25,000 miles per hour. thanks to a viewer in santa cruz, here you can see it in color that bright red flare. last night's meet year appeared for only about 5 seconds when it came into the atmosphere and it came with a boom. experts say that was a sonic boom one that was heard and seen throughout the bay. >> just looking down and saw this really bright white light and i looked up in the sky and just streaking across it almost like a firework but it was such a bright light and so intense and you could tell it wasn't a firework. >> reporter: now, stargazers took to social media site twitter:

the trail giving us the meteor showers, hitting the earth at 148,000 miles an hour. the peak of this is expected to come saturday night into sunday. unfortunately, it looks like we are going to be seeing clouds in the skies. outside now we are cloud-free and temperatures kind of all over the map right now. we have in a offshore wind and 62 degrees in oakland but 48 in santa rosa and 63 degrees in san francisco. toward the afternoon expecting 80s in the south bay, east bay temperatures 80s and 90s again. and inside the bay should be beautiful about 80 degrees in san francisco. about 79 in alameda. and 81 in hayward. even 70s at the coast but this is it. we have some rain coming our way, too. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. let's check the roads now with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. we have two separate accidents we're following both of which don't sound good. one is right there approaching the san mateo bridge toll plaza so we are getting a little more information on this. apparently, three lanes are blocked now on westbound 92 and that car involved in the accident on its roof. so there may be injuries likely

wall street history and here to chat about it now is jill schlesinger, editor at large for cbsmoneywatch.com. how do you put it into perspective. i remember the day. >> reporter: it was black monday because the dow jones industrial average plummeted 508 points. that was 22.6% of its total value. think about this. at today's levels, it would mean a near 3,000 point drop in one day. now, remember, the worst day of the recent financial crisis that was back in october 2008. the dow tumbled over 700 points. that was a mere 7.8% -- enough for all of us. it made it the ninth worst session in dow history. so 1987 is still the big bad daddy of them all. >> boy, yeah, no kidding. what can we learn from that crash? and then how can investors protect themselves? >> i think the first thing to remember is these things can happen.

roof. so they are working to clear this. we are not sure about injuries. it is stacking up behind the pay gates so consider using the dumbarton bridge as an alternate. let's go to our maps and i'll show you what it looks like on our live traffic sensors. we are seeing a little slowing closer towards the high-rise on westbound 92 as well but so far, so good down southbound 880 onto highway 84 instead. so this is our other problem spot. in fact they just issued a traffic alert now in menlo park. northbound 101 approaching marsh road three lanes blocked. this was a solo car crash and then other cars crashed into that car. so you know the drill kind of became a ripple effect. now they have several lanes blocked off. once again, that traffic alert is in effect. this gridlock through menlo park from at least highway 84 according to our traffic sensors in the area which are showing some speeds below 25 miles per hour. 49ers game later on this evening could impact the evening commute home 5:20, 49ers versus the seahawks but
